We all know that fashion is a loop, it runs in cycle, from century to century, from vintage to modern and back to vintage again. So it is no surprise here if vintage gradually becomes trends again in recent years. So I just ask myself a question? Why are vintage trends popular again? The answer is Fashion is cyclical in general and ‘ what was old will almost certainly become new again’, some fashion trends never go out of style like jeans or crop tops or even swimsuits, that’s why I usually store my old clothes and wait for the day they can shine again. I am not that crazy to store all of them, just my favorite expensive one that I will feel guilty if I throw it away.

So I will talk a little bit about vintage fashion trends that were famous in the past and now return stronger than ever in 2020 which inspire and appear everywhere in advertising materials, music videos, magazines, fashion shows or even slow fashion brands that are appreciated by lots of elegant and classic women.

In 1990s, we had Marilyn Monroe started red lipstick trend, embrace curves in ‘gentlemen prefer blonds’ and Chanel No.5 and beauty mark; we had Audrey Hepburn with timeless vintage style such as wear a bowtie and suit jacket, simple black dresses, capri pant which were introduced by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in 1948, I believed or high waist belt in the middle of your dress and so on. A lot of timeless and valuable trends started in the 1900s or even beyond that. I am a Asian without any knowledge about Western vintage or just a little bit because I live far from Saigon in the 1990s where used to very about Western trends because of French colonization, now I am a vintage lover and feel so excited for the strong return of the vintage trend.

Okay, It's a bit of a long story, I will go stray to 4 vintage styles and come back stronger than ever.

1. Choker

During the French Revolution, French women emigrants were seen wearing red ribbons around their necks. This is a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives from the guillotine circa 1790. Then in the Victorian Era, society women wore chokers, many with expensive jewels, as a fashion statement. I believed that they copied it from the Princess of Wales, Alexandra who wore tight neck-wear to cover a scar. In 19th, many women in the West wore choker as a fashion jewelry, very simple like a red ribbon, after many years it was become a hybrid necessity with lots of version and different style/colors, A crochet choker of daisies or other flowers would pair nicely with a long flowing skirt, adding to the “romance” of the era.

The chokers were worn daily and not simply on special occasions. It disappeared for a while but now in 2020, choker became a trend again during Fashion Week, either in Paris, New York, Milan or London, the average woman can count on that style to reach her nearest clothing store by the following season. Naturally, lots of biggest movie and music stars wear some of it in their movie and music videos making choker become popular again.

2. High Waist belt chains

After choker trends, it is high waist belt chains. I am not talking about a normal belt, I talk about a high waist belt which makes your waist look smaller and more elegant.. Some trends are risen but It fades even faster than the bowl of noodles I'm eating like a biker short but some trends are waiting to come back, it may take months and sometimes even years to become full-fledged. Yes, High Waist belt chains are coming back in lots of luxury fashion shows like Chanels or Alexander Wang and Lanvin, you cannot deny the beloved trend in the 19th is now risen stronger again. Far from the clunky silver slinging off of low-rise jeans, this time around, it's gold, bold and placed high on the waist and is worn by lots of famous influencer, fashion blogger and beauty icon like Aimee Song and Leandra Medine at Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris. It seems like a small trend is ready to make a real comeback.

3. Puffed sleeves victorian

In 2020, you will see a dynamix puffed sleeves victorian style everywhere, I mean everywhere, ‘The larger-than-life sleeve has presented itself in many variations: the balloon, the Juliet, the leg-of-mutton, and so on. It was first seen fixed to Victorian-inspired shirts and romantic house dresses, but the market has since expanded (no pun intended) to anything that has a sleeve.’ (Vogue 2020)

it is not only in fashion shows like balloon sleeves on sweaters at Fendi, billowing sleeves attached to pleated shirt dresses at McQueen, perfectly puffed gowns at Rodarte, and double-breasted winter coats at JW Anderson.’ (Vogue 2020). At least, that is the description of Vogue, but I saw it a lot in street style, music videos and popular items of many low fashion brand in French like Maison Cleo, in Britain, The Olivia The label, more example like Roses and Jennie wore balloon sleeves in the music video ‘Ice Cream’ collaborating with Selena Gomez. And you probably do not know how popular Black Pink is now, because they wear this style of sleeves, it may become a trend in the near future. I truly believe in my vision

Okay, cool! To sum up everything, I strongly guess, famous and timeless vintage styles will come back stronger than ever in coming years not only in fashion shows, street styles bla bla but also in other industries like makeup or interior design, who knows? Please comment below any vintage trends you guess that will become popular in the future or what do you think about this comeback, just let me know down below.
